SILENT RUNNING (1971) dir. D. TRUMBULL

Special effects whiz Trumbull had a million dollars plus final cut rights. It shows—big ideas on shoestrings, and pacing as ponderous as a space freighter. Bruce Dern goes from temperamental hippy gardener to ecoterrorist, becomes besties with cute mute robots. The “twist” is forehead-slappingly dopey. And ugh, Joan Baez.
