My first film in my Criterion Spine Number project (being as it's #1) and a wonderful kickoff. Jean Gabin's natural charm balances with a blue-collar gruffness that captivates (forget Steve McQueen in The Great Escape). Carette's optimistic vaudevillian rises to the top of a superb supporting cast of POWs.
