McCABE AND MRS. MILLER (1971) dir. R. ALTMAN


Looks handmade, built of cedar. As the town is constructed (growing with every shot), Altman deconstructs the Western: heroes are dopey, dependent; the one gunfight, prolonged and dead silent; tumbleweeds are traded for snow. Even Carradine’s Cowboy is a pacifist. (Kubrick, an admirer, let McCabe's conclusion influence The Shining, surely.)
