WAITING FOR GUFFMAN (1996) dir. C. GUEST

What needs mocking more than abysmal Midwestern community theatre? Almost can’t call it satire—it’s so intricately, lovingly wrought. Later films, like Drop Dead Gorgeous, forgot that Guffman’s hilarity comes from the characters’ unbearable humanity. The DVD’s “Bulging River” number is bloated but worth watching. Corky hits a high C!
